The Task
Over the next two days, you will be working with homophones that 4th graders use often. You will be creating a homophones book as well as doing some written practice. Follow the steps below to create your own book to use in your writing. As you are working, be careful to remember that the information is much more important than the coloring and decorating. Make sure you get your information in the booklet before you jazz it up! You will be instructed to get out the coloring tools in step 5
Step 1: Give your homophones book a name. Make sure it is something that will help you know what is inside it right away. Put your title and name on the front cover of the book.
Step 2: Flip to the inside of the book. You will be working on the next page (not the back of the cover). [PAGE 1] you will need to put what a homophone is. Use this website to help you. You might want to check out the video at the bottom too! Make sure you put the defintion in your own words! Also, include at least 3 examples of sets of homophones on this page.
Step 3: In this step, you are going to be creating the pages of your booklet [PAGE 2-8]. YOU WILL NEED TO USE THE FRONT AND BACK OF EVERY PAGE EXCEPT THE FRONT COVER!!!
On EACH page, you will need to:
A. Write each form of the homophone set (ex. there, their, they're)
B. Then write what each word means (ex. there- a place, their- belongs to someone, they're- they are)
Type your word into the dictionary to find out what it means. Be sure to check each word even if
you think you already know what it means!
C. Use each word in a sentence and underline it (ex. Sally and George want me to come see their dog.)
D. Draw a small picture to help you remember when each word is used
Use the homophone sets below:
[PAGE 2] by bye buy
[PAGE 3] to too two
[PAGE 4] hear here
[PAGE 5] write right YOU SHOULD GET FINISHED WITH AT LEAST PAGE 5 BY THE END OF DAY 1!!!
[PAGE 6] one won
[PAGE 7] dear deer
[PAGE 8] piece peace
Step 4: On the back cover of your book, you will find a short story. It is your task to look through the story and find all the homophones we have been practicing this week (there, their, they're are fair game too!). Once you find a homophone in the story, determine if it is used correctly. If it is, leave it alone. If it is not, cross it out and write in the correct one. **There are 13 mistakes!**
Step 5: Now you may jazz up your book with colored pencils and crayons.
Step 6: If you finish early, repeat step 3 using their, there, and they're!!!
Step 7: Now you may play the homophones games below
